It is almost hosting season! Whether you are hosting a dinner party or have house guests coming to stay with you during the holidays, having guests over can be fun, but also stressful. Here’s how to make your guests feel at home — and keep yourself from stressing about the state of your living room.
Clear the Clutter
We’ve all been there, frantically running around 15 minutes before guests arrive trying to stash clutter out of sight, and do a last-minute tidy. This year, save yourself the panic and tackle the clutter now! Clear off the coffee table and side tables of anything that does not belong there. Recycle old newspapers and magazines, and organize current issues in a basket. Stack books on a shelf, or under the coffee table, and place remote controls, and other electronics in the TV console.
If your family likes to snuggle under blankets for family movie night, stash the blankets and extra pillows in a stylish basket. It will look much neater than pillows and blankets strewn across the backs of all the furniture.
Give the Walls Fresh Coat of Paint
If you have the time before guests arrive consider a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Obviously this is not a project to tackle the day before your guests come into town, but if you can work it into your schedule a couple of weeks before, a fresh coat of paint can make a room feel cleaner and brighter! I know this time of the year painting a room may seem like a big commitment, but painting your walls is a simple and budget-friendly update that can totally transform the look and feel of any space.
This year, I am enlisting the help of my daughters and we are painting over the beige paint in my living room with a lighter, more modern Greige Color. The color I selected was Campfire Ash from Behr, I’m working on painting all the rooms on my first level this foggy grey color, and I love how neutral it is!
Update a Tired Sofa with a Slipcover
With a slipcover came versatility, washability and the option to change up my living room decor rather inexpensively. Slipcovers are a much more affordable option than a brand new sofa! Trust me, I know!
I covered up my dated floral sofa with the Twill Round Arm Classic Slipcovers soft, 100% cotton twill slipcover. The new slipcover instantly transformed my space. I love how I can style my sofa seasonally, however I’d like without worrying about my throw pillows and blankets clashing with the floral print. When you’re ready for a change, you can simply switch the slipcover for a different style or color and get a new look in a matter of minutes.
I love how casual and easy-going my newly slipcovered couch feels in my space. The unfussy vibe seems to encourage relaxing and will help make guests feel at home, and definitely refreshed the look of my whole living room!
Wash or Dry Clean Window Coverings
Curtains are a magnet for household dust and odors! It is recommended to clean your curtains every 3 to 6 months, and I love to wash mine before the holidays. Washing, or having your curtains cleaned before guests arrive is a easy way to keep your house fresh and clean.
Before you do anything, check the care label on your window treatments to see if the manufacturer recommends hand washing, steaming, vacuuming or dry cleaning and whether it’s safe to put your curtains in the washing machine.
Add Some New Accent Pieces
One of my favorite ways to spruce up any room is to add some new decorative items. Decorative accessories add charm, character, and should tell a story about our family.
Find something you love, that gives your home some character. Adding a fun new accent piece doesn’t need to cost a lot, scour consignment and thrift stores for vases, barware, mirrors, and art that reflect your own personal style. One of my favorite garage sale finds is an old hardcover copy of Gone With The Wind. The book is hardly an antique, but Gone with the Wind was the first “adult” book I read while I was in my early teens. To this day the book still holds a special place in my heart, and now is prominently displayed in my bookshelves.
Give Your Livingroom Some TLC
Spend some time reorganizing, editing, and cleaning—you’ll be surprised at what a little elbow grease can do. From dusting those hard-to-reach surfaces to spot cleaning the walls and trim, nothing is more inviting than a clean livingroom for guests to relax and unwind in. Once your guests have arrived light a candle, and fill a vase with a beautiful fresh bouquet of flowers, to make the room fresh and festive.
