Homemade Pizza Seasoning

Traditional Italian Herbs are combined with onion flakes, garlic powder, thyme, rosemary and red pepper flakes in this spice mix to take your pizza to the next level.

I love making homemade pizza, it is an inexpensive alternative to visiting our local pizza parlor. But I couldn’t help but feel something was missing…I was using a good sauce, and fresh cheese, but for some reason, my pizzas seemed somewhat boring, and maybe even a little uninspired. Until I found this recipe for Homemade Pizza seasoning.

Homemade Pizza Seasoning

What is Pizza Seasoning?

Homemade Pizza seasoning is simply a blend of traditional Italian spices, which complements pizza remarkably well.

The more I used this homemade seasoning blend, the more I appreciated the mix of flavors. I now use this in place of Italian seasoning in many recipes, there is no comparison. Italian seasoning is flat and lacking compared to this blend. I add a teaspoon in the ricotta mixture for my stuffed shells, it is always included in my Baked Ziti, sprinkled on homemade breadsticks, and I even use it in bread dough. The uses for this mix are endless.

Homemade Pizza Seasoning stores very well in an airtight container, go ahead and mix some up in advance you will be surprised how much you reach for it while cooking and baking! I like to use a shaker lid on a mason jar, so I can flip the top open and quickly measure out exactly what I need.

How do I use homemade pizza seasoning?

I started using homemade pizza seasoning to sprinkle on my homemade pizza crusts prior to baking, but quickly expanded my usage of it. I now incorporate it into my homemade sauce or even add a little into the dough ingredients in my bread maker to bake the flavor right into the dough.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 tbsp oregano
  • 1 tbsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1 1/2 tbsp dried onion flakes
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients. The most flavorful results are achieved with a mortar and pestle or a Spice or Coffee Grinder.
  2. Store in a tightly sealed container and in a dry, cool place

I have all the ingredients on hand except for onion flakes. Can I substitute with onion powder?

I might scale back the onion powder slightly, perhaps to 1 tablespoon, and taste test it. If the flavor isn’t to your satisfaction, use a dash or two more. As always, please use your best judgment regarding substitutions and modifications 🙂

Great taste. However, as usual, I over did it. A little goes a long way. Sprinkled on my, foccacia, french breads, etc. Helps it all.

    THANKS!!!

Thanks I made a double batch of this spice and used a Teaspoon in two small loafs of bread I made today. Everybody loved the bread. Can’t wait to try it in other things including my homemade pizza. I will put it in with the dough and on top. Bet it would be good in mashed potatos too. Thanks again.

Do you think pizza seasoning would taste good on roasted potatoes?

I have used this to season roasted potatoes, and I love it, especially with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese! It definitely gives the potatoes an Italian taste!

I just sprinkle it on the top lightly, or if I am making my own dough I add about a teaspoon in with the ingredients in my breadmaker.

      Hi Alice,
They are also known as crushed red pepper flakes, the most common kind found in the grocery store are available from McCormick. I will update the recipe with a link to the product on Amazon so you can get a visual!

Great recipe. Don’t you use garlic bits instead of powder. and hot oil to remove the raw flavour of the herbs.

      Thank you!
The spin through the spice grinder makes the herb pieces smaller, and they seem blend into the cheese pretty well.
But I am working on a pizza sauce recipe that uses the Homemade Pizza seasoning right in it. I should have that posted next week!

I really like to make my own seasoning blends whenever possible, I think they taste better and I know they don’t have a bunch of extra salt and/or preservatives. This sounds like a great seasoning blend for pizza! Thanks for sharing on Foodie Friends Friday!

[…] Pizza Seasoning: Definitely the star of the show here! I bought a “pizza seasoning spice blend” a few weeks ago from The Spice & Tea Exchange and have been obsessed with it ever since! While I’m not usually a fan of most store bought spice blends, this one is made with all real ingredients and really gives the frittata it’s pizza-y flavor. (That being said, you can also use your own pizza seasoning too! Here are a few homemade seasoning blends that would also be fantastic!
