Kitchen Color Palette

Sharing is caring!

Now that my brothers wedding is over, and I am feeling better it is time to get back to my big kitchen project that is literally looming over my head.  We have decided to try to bring our kitchen into the current century, but to keep things in budget with the exception of the ceiling we are sticking with surface updates and cosmetic upgrades. I have been putting off picking paint colors for a while, but decided yesterday it was just time to settle on a kitchen color palette.

Why I need a kitchen update!

Up until now I have had no idea which colors I wanted to use. It is easier for me to pick paint colors after I find the fabrics I love, but fabric shopping can take long and be expensive. I was lured out to Joann Fabrics with a 50% off coupon I got in my email, home decorating fabrics can really be pricey so I thought I would try my luck with the coupon. I was not expecting to find much, but my trip ended up providing some much needed inspiration, and a great deal on fabric to make new curtains for my dinning room windows. Once I had the fabric in my hand a palette started to come together in my mind quickly, with cool and calming shades of muted greens and blues.

After I got the kids to bed I dived in to Pinterest to pin anything that seemed to fit into my color palette to keep me on track when I start buying accessories.  Looking at my board now I think I was originally going for light and airy and ended up in coastal cottage but, but I found a color palette that I am happy with, and hope it will totally transform my kitchen. I knew I really wanted to use much lighter colors than I have had in my kitchen. I have tried to work with the knotty pine in the past, using dark earthy colors, but sometimes in winter it feels like a dark little cave even with all the lights on.  My husband has never been very keen on the idea of painting the knotty pine, but I wore him down convinced him that as long as the knotty pine was left as it is it would always feel dark and dated in the kitchen. He agreed painting the cabinets would make a huge impact for relatively little out of pocket, just the cost of a can of paint and primer!

Bottom Paint Color Pale Powder #204 by Farrow & Ball

So I keep going back and forth on color placement, I am thinking Mizzle #266 by Farrow & Ball on the knotty pine. Lime White #1 by Farrow & Ball on the walls and back-splash, or the reverse and Pale Powder #204 by Farrow & Ball as an accent color on kitchen stools and possibly inside a cabinet that I am thinking of removing the doors on and making into a cook book shelf.

I took home 6 yards of the fabric from Joann’s, hoping that would be enough to do simple panels for my windows, they are pretty narrow, so I think I am good. The paint is somewhat of an issue, nowhere in the Finger Lakes area sells Farrow & Ball, and I am not really to excited to pay $96 a gallon.  So I will most likely color match the paint colors I like at Home Depot in Behr Paint.
